Shares of Plug Power have delivered a remarkable performance in recent weeks, surging approximately 49% and catching many investors off guard. The hydrogen specialist, once considered a troubled player within the clean energy sector, appears to be regaining significant momentum. This raises a critical question: what is driving this unexpected recovery, and does the company possess the foundation to sustain it long-term?

Operational Improvements Fuel Investor Confidence

Beyond the headline-grabbing stock movement, concrete operational progress provides substance to the optimism. For the second quarter of 2025, Plug Power reported a robust 21% increase in revenue, reaching $174 million. This growth was propelled by strengthening demand across its hydrogen product portfolio.

A particularly standout performance came from the electrolyzer business unit. This segment generated roughly $45 million in revenue, effectively tripling its year-over-year sales. This surge demonstrates growing adoption of Plug Power’s GenEco platform for clean hydrogen production among industrial clients.

The company is also making measurable strides toward profitability. Its gross margin showed substantial improvement, moving from a deeply negative -92% in the prior year to -31%. While still in negative territory, this represents a decisive move in the right direction.

Strategic Deals Serve as Key Catalysts

The immediate catalyst for the recent investor enthusiasm stems from two significant business developments. The company secured a partnership extension with logistics titan Uline, now extended through 2030. This agreement ensures long-term revenue visibility within the critical material handling segment and should reassure investors concerned about business predictability. It also underscores the increasing acceptance of hydrogen technology in warehouses and distribution centers.

Concurrently, Plug Power announced a new collaborative venture with GH2 Global. This partnership aims to develop hydrogen fuel cell hubs across Brazil, highlighting the company’s strategic ambition to expand its international footprint and capitalize on South America’s emerging hydrogen economy.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Expanding Infrastructure Supports Growth Narrative

Plug Power’s expanding physical infrastructure forms the backbone of its growth strategy. With production facilities operational in Georgia, Tennessee, and Louisiana, the company currently possesses a daily hydrogen production capacity of 40 tons. Its established market presence includes a network of over 275 fueling stations and the delivery of more than 72,000 fuel cell systems to date, serving high-profile clients such as Walmart, Amazon, and BMW.

An ambitious expansion program is underway for 2025, with plans to launch more than 40 new sites. This aggressive growth initiative highlights the company’s preparedness to meet rising demand for hydrogen solutions.

Analyst Sentiment Remains Cautious

Despite these positive developments, a note of caution prevails among market experts. The majority of analysts covering the stock maintain a skeptical outlook. Out of 16 analysts, most continue to recommend selling the shares. The consensus price target sits at $1.88, which remains below the current trading level.

This skepticism is not without foundation. Plug Power’s path to sustained profitability is still fraught with challenges. The capital-intensive nature of building hydrogen infrastructure demands continuous investment. Whether the new partnerships and operational gains will be sufficient to guide the company firmly into the black remains an open question.

The next significant test will arrive in November with the release of third-quarter earnings. These results will provide crucial evidence indicating whether Plug Power can meet heightened expectations or if the recent rally will prove short-lived.
