The Hidden Concentration Risk in a Popular Global ETF

A significant concentration of assets within the iShares MSCI World ETF (URTH) is raising questions about its diversification. The ten largest holdings now account for 27.6% of the entire fund’s portfolio. This heavy reliance on a handful of technology behemoths exposes what is marketed as a broadly diversified investment to substantial sector-specific volatility.

Geographical Imbalance and US Dominance

The fund’s geographical allocation shows a pronounced tilt, with US equities representing more than 70% of its holdings—a record level of concentration. Japan and the United Kingdom trail far behind with significantly smaller allocations. This lopsided geographic distribution means that performance is overwhelmingly dictated by events on Wall Street, challenging the “global” nature of this ETF.

The Double-Edged Sword of Technology

The information technology sector commands the largest weighting, followed by financial and healthcare stocks. The fund’s quarterly rebalancing mechanism provides limited relief from this built-in concentration. Consequently, a significant price decline in any single top holding—such as Apple, Microsoft, or Nvidia—could impact millions of investors worldwide.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MSCI World ETF?

This situation prompts a critical evaluation: has the MSCI World ETF evolved into a de facto US technology fund, rather than maintaining its identity as a well-diversified global portfolio?

The Limits of Rebalancing

While the quarterly index adjustment is designed to maintain balance, its practical effect often reinforces existing trends. High-performing technology stocks frequently see their weightings increased during these reviews, while underperforming sectors continue to diminish in importance. This dynamic can inadvertently amplify the very concentration risk it is meant to mitigate.
