AI’s Warning Lights Flash as Crypto Steals the Spotlight

Dear readers,

Friday we told you how Oracle’s contracted backlog let it shrug off a bond market flirting with 5% yields, while Bitcoin bent under the same pressure. Monday flipped that script. Oracle’s stock is falling despite another blowout quarter, crypto is holding firm into a pivotal Senate vote, and the industry that has carried this market for two years is producing its most pointed warnings yet — from the people building it.

The AI Trade Hits a Guardrail

The cracks in the AI story are no longer coming from skeptics on the sidelines — they’re coming from inside the room. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that AI agents could inflict damages in the hundreds of billions of dollars within the next six to twelve months. Almost simultaneously, OpenAI’s Sam Altman closed the door on a 2026 IPO for his company, and Microsoft rolled out a new, provisional code of conduct explicitly designed to slow the pace of its own model development. Institutional voices are piling on: the Bank for International Settlements flagged growing fragility in AI-related investment, pointing to a tech-sector debt load it sees swelling past $1 trillion by 2025. Markets took the hint. Nvidia shed more than 2% in European trading, and equipment makers like ASML fell considerably harder. The message for portfolios is blunt: buying infrastructure and “shovel” names indiscriminately no longer works. Capital is rotating toward companies that prioritize safety testing and can actually turn AI into profit within existing business lines — not just promise it.

Oracle and Adobe Swap Scripts

Nowhere is that filtering-out process more visible than in software. Oracle’s first-quarter revenue jumped almost 30% to $19.35 billion, powered by an outright explosion in its cloud-infrastructure business — numbers that, on their face, look every bit as strong as the backlog story we highlighted Friday. Adobe, by contrast, turned in a more modest but respectable $6.76 billion in third-quarter revenue and raised its fiscal 2026 guidance. KeyBanc’s analysts drew sharply opposite conclusions from the same set of results: a $300 price target and a buy rating on Oracle, paired with a downgrade of Adobe to “sell.” The market, however, is doing the opposite of what the analyst note suggests. Adobe is up 2.6% on the day, while Oracle is down roughly 5%. It’s a reminder that a strong headline number is no longer a free pass — how unevenly AI features actually monetize, and how much froth is already baked into a stock’s valuation, matter just as much. High multiples make even good quarters vulnerable to profit-taking.

Crypto’s Washington Moment

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Oracle?

While AI hardware wobbles, crypto is showing the kind of relative strength that would have seemed unlikely a few sessions ago. Bitcoin is holding stable above $77,600, decoupled from the broader risk-off mood. The catalyst sits in Washington: the Senate is set to hold a critical procedural vote on Tuesday on the Clarity Act, the comprehensive framework for regulating digital assets. The bill’s progress has outpaced market expectations. To lock in the bipartisan support needed to advance it, Donald Trump has agreed to strict ethics provisions, including blind trusts for administration officials, and negotiators built in a stablecoin “circuit breaker” designed to ease banks’ fears of sudden deposit flight. If the Senate clears this hurdle, the door opens wider for institutional capital. Ripple offers a preview of the scale involved: its fast-growing stablecoin, RLUSD, is already being pitched squarely at the $13 trillion corporate treasury market.

Oil Adds Fuel to the Fed Debate

Away from tech and crypto, a familiar macro risk is reasserting itself. Brent crude jumped nearly 5% intraday and broke above $109 a barrel, driven by escalating tension in the Middle East. The timing is awkward: inflation remains stubbornly above the Fed’s 2% target, and swaps markets are now pricing in roughly 90% odds of a rate hike at this Wednesday’s decision — consistent with the sharp repricing we flagged after Friday’s inflation data. Rising rates layered on top of a sudden oil shock is precisely the combination that punishes richly valued growth stocks with cash flows sitting years out on the horizon, which helps explain why pressure on the Nasdaq hasn’t let up.

Two Days That Will Set the Tone

Between Tuesday’s Senate vote on crypto regulation and Wednesday’s Fed decision, volatility over the next 48 hours is close to guaranteed. Investors should use this window to stress-test concentration risk in AI hardware holdings and rebuild portfolios with more shock absorption before the macro winds fully shift. Friday’s lesson was that a strong backlog can insulate a stock. This week’s early lesson is that even a strong backlog isn’t immune once the industry itself starts sounding the alarm.

Best regards,
