The explosive computational workloads required for artificial intelligence are placing unprecedented strain on infrastructure. In response, Coherent has unveiled a new hardware innovation designed to extract far greater efficiency from the installed base of fiber optic networks. As the industry scrambles to move data faster and across longer distances, the company’s latest release aims to alleviate a critical infrastructure bottleneck without the need for widespread new construction.

A Strategic Launch in a Demanding Market

Coherent announced the general availability of a pioneering optical module on March 6, 2026. Marketed as the industry’s first dual-laser QSFP28-DCO module, this technology enables bidirectional 100G transmission over a single optical fiber for distances reaching 300 kilometers. For network operators, the implication is significant: a potential tenfold increase in capacity compared to legacy 10G links, all without the prohibitive cost and delay of laying new cable.

This development arrives as market demand increasingly shifts toward 800G and 1.6T transceivers. While the new module may not single-handedly satisfy the voracious bandwidth appetite of AI data centers, its focus on optimizing existing infrastructure offers a compelling cost-saving alternative to a complete, capital-intensive network overhaul.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Coherent?

Share Performance and Technical Positioning

Despite the technological announcement, Coherent’s equity faced selling pressure in Friday’s session. The stock retreated by 7.31%, closing at €203.00. This short-term pullback, however, occurs against the backdrop of a remarkable twelve-month rally that saw the shares appreciate by approximately 236%. Currently, with a Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading just below 60, the stock sits in neutral territory, having moved down from its 52-week high of €256.00.

The March 2026 launch underscores Coherent’s strategic focus on integrating complex photonics into standardized form factors. The critical factor in the coming months will be the adoption rate among major cloud service providers. Successful implementation into their architectures could further reduce latency and scale bandwidth for global AI computations, deferring the need for immediate, large-scale re-cabling projects.
