While the S&P 500 index has held relatively steady, Amazon’s stock performance has diverged, declining approximately 7% since the start of the year. This underperformance stems not from weak business results, but from a fundamental investor concern: when will the company’s colossal investment program begin to yield tangible returns?
A Historic Capital Expenditure Plan
Central to the market’s debate is Amazon’s projected capital expenditure for 2026, which is slated to reach a record $200 billion. This figure represents a significant increase over the prior year’s spending. The vast majority of these funds are earmarked for expanding the cloud infrastructure of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and building out artificial intelligence capabilities. For shareholders focused on near-term profitability and free cash flow, this outlay is a headwind. Others, however, view it as an essential foundation for the company’s next phase of expansion.
Recent developments provide fuel for the optimistic view. AWS, the cloud division, reported a 24% year-over-year growth rate in the fourth quarter, marking an acceleration from preceding quarters. In a strategic move to bolster its AI offerings, Amazon has also forged a partnership between AWS and AI chip specialist Cerebras. This collaboration is designed to deliver faster and more cost-effective AI inference.

Regulatory Relief and European Expansion
On the regulatory front, Amazon recently caught a break. A court in Luxembourg overturned a data protection fine of €746 million and ordered a reassessment of the case, temporarily removing a significant legal overhang in the European market.
Strategically, the company is doubling down on growth in Central Europe. Plans are in place for investments totaling roughly $6.2 billion in Poland between 2026 and 2028. Despite the heavy investment cycle, Amazon’s operating cash flow remains robust, demonstrating that the core business is generating sufficient strength to fund this ambitious wave of spending.
The critical question for investors is whether the massive build-out of AI infrastructure will generate the anticipated returns. The answer will begin to materialize in the quarterly financial reports, likely becoming clearer in the second half of 2026.
