AeroVironment: A Defense Rebuild Still Waiting for the Market to Catch Up

The gap between AeroVironment’s operational momentum and its stock price has rarely been wider. On Tuesday, shares climbed 3.84 percent — a welcome bounce, yet one that leaves the equity trading barely 22 percent above its 52-week low. The company has spent the past year reinventing itself from a single-product drone maker into a diversified defense technology group, but investors have yet to reward the transformation.

That disconnect was on full display this week as AeroVironment unveiled a strategic partnership with software specialist Applied Intuition. The collaboration centers on integrating Applied Intuition’s Acuity ISR/Strike software into AeroVironment’s Mayhem 10 system — a platform capable of carrying a ten-pound payload over more than 100 kilometers, with endurance exceeding 50 minutes and a launch time under five minutes. The aim is to make autonomous swarm operations for unmanned systems a practical battlefield reality, with the US Army’s Launched Effects program — which emphasizes rapidly deployable, networked effectors — a key target.

A Pipeline Filling on Multiple Fronts

The Applied Intuition deal is just the latest in a string of operational advances. On Monday, the US Army published a solicitation for a new battalion-level reconnaissance drone system, seeking a platform under 55 pounds with at least 40 kilometers of range, five hours of endurance, and a minimum payload of five pounds. Bidders must be capable of producing at least 13 systems within 30 days, with expressions of interest due by August 28. AeroVironment already has a foothold in this segment: in June, the company secured a $117.3 million order for 82 units of its P550 system.

Counter-drone operations remain another pillar of the growth story. The Pentagon’s JIATF 401 unit has awarded software startup Kaizen a $15 million contract to further develop the Counter-UAS marketplace, the Defense Department’s procurement channel for counter-drone systems. AeroVironment is listed among the approved vendors alongside Anduril, SMARTSHOOTER, and DroneShield. The marketplace, operational since late February, had already recorded $21 million in purchases as of Monday, with partner nations including Australia, Poland, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Romania participating.

Software as the New Battlefield

The company’s shift toward software-defined warfare has been building for months. In July, AeroVironment demonstrated its AV_Halo software ecosystem under the Army’s “Operation Jailbreak” initiative, proving that its systems can integrate seamlessly into third-party command-and-control architectures through open interfaces. For a hardware manufacturer, that capability is a strategic statement rather than a technical footnote.

The Mayhem 10 system, unveiled this spring, embodies the broader pivot. Unlike its predecessors, Mayhem is not a pure one-way attack aircraft. It can conduct electronic warfare, reconnaissance, and precision strikes in equal measure — modularity that aligns with Pentagon priorities for systems cheap enough to lose but sophisticated enough to operate in contested signal environments.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AeroVironment?

This positioning puts AeroVironment in direct competition with venture-backed rivals like Anduril and Shield AI, which command enormous valuations based largely on future promises. AeroVironment’s counterargument is its existing manufacturing base — the ability to produce these capabilities at scale today, not just conceptualize them.

The Numbers Tell a Complicated Story

The stock’s trajectory remains the central tension for investors. AeroVironment hit a yearly high of 354.30 euros in October 2025, but now trades at 138.00 euros — roughly 30 percent below its 200-day average of 198.96 euros. The decline of 40.41 percent over twelve months has erased much of the post-2024 hype, and the stock is down 35.18 percent since the start of the year.

Yet there are signs of stabilization. At 138.00 euros, the shares sit 17.50 percent above their 52-week low of 117.45 euros. The Relative Strength Index of 52.1 indicates the oversold zone has been left behind, though without signaling an overheated recovery. The stock has been range-bound for weeks, lacking clear directional conviction.

Analysts remain cautiously optimistic. MarketBeat’s assessment identifies AeroVironment — alongside Kratos and Red Cat — as a drone stock that could recover from its retreat off 2026 highs, despite the sector’s continued strong operational growth rates. The firm cites a price target of 266.68 dollars, implying upside of roughly 71 percent from current levels. The consensus analyst target of 195.99 euros suggests more modest but still substantial upside of 42 percent.

Structural Tailwinds

The macro backdrop supports the bull case. The Pentagon budget allocates approximately $53.6 billion for autonomous drone systems, with an additional $21 billion for munitions and counter-drone capabilities — funding that should structurally underpin demand in the coming years. Beyond defense, a PW Consulting forecast projects the oil and gas drone market will exceed $100 billion by the end of the decade, growing at 19.12 percent annually between 2026 and 2032, with AeroVironment listed among established players alongside DJI, Skydio, and Terra Drone.

The defense industry’s broader shift — away from exquisite, billion-dollar single platforms toward mass-produced autonomous swarms and interoperable software — plays directly to AeroVironment’s new identity. With a market capitalization of 6.56 billion euros, the company sits precisely at this crossroads. The question hanging over the stock is whether investors will ultimately value it as a hardware manufacturer or as a software house. The answer will determine whether the current share price represents a value trap or the painful birth of a new kind of defense contractor.
