China’s Lithography Leap Rattles Chips Before Microsoft’s Test

Dear readers,

Asia delivered a number Tuesday that stopped traders cold: South Korea’s Kospi plunged 11 percent, the sharpest single-session drop the index has ever recorded. The trigger wasn’t a rate shock or a geopolitical flare-up — it was a technology story. China has apparently cracked deep ultraviolet lithography, and the fallout is rewriting the semiconductor pecking order just as Microsoft and Meta prepare to answer the far bigger question hanging over this market: whether any of this AI spending actually pays.

Beijing Cracks the ASML Monopoly

For nearly two decades, ASML has been the sole gatekeeper of the lithography equipment that makes advanced chips possible — a monopoly so complete it functioned as a geopolitical chokepoint as much as a business advantage. That moat now has a crack in it. China is targeting production of five domestic DUV machines in 2026, scaling to 20 units by 2027, according to reports that triggered Monday’s selloff and Tuesday’s rout across Asian markets.

Wall Street’s reaction was swift and unsparing. ASML shares fell roughly 6 percent on the Nasdaq Monday — down as much as 8.2 percent intraday before clawing back some ground — while the Amsterdam listing closed 8.5 percent lower. Micron dropped 5 percent, AMD slid 4 percent, and memory maker SanDisk bore the brunt of it, shedding nearly $50 billion in market value over two trading sessions as investors weighed both Chinese competition and a separate NAND pricing investigation. The lesson here isn’t subtle: a technology lead, however wide, has a shelf life, and the market just found out how short China’s engineers think ASML’s actually is.

The Real Test Arrives Wednesday

The hardware rout is the warm-up act. The main event is Wednesday, when Microsoft and Meta report — and the market’s patience with capex-without-payoff is visibly thinning. Nvidia already felt that shift Monday, dropping on reports of a $250 billion financing package tied to a new OpenAI data center; investors who once cheered every AI infrastructure announcement are now asking pointed questions about who actually pays that bill back.

The track record so far isn’t encouraging: just one of five mega-cap tech companies has managed to beat the broader market the day after reporting this earnings season. If Microsoft can’t show that its recent AI outlays are converting into cloud margin expansion and software revenue growth — not just bigger data centers — the entire sector is looking at a hard repricing. The market that spent two years extending credit for raw compute now wants to see the receipts.

Qualcomm and the Great Chip Sector Sorting

Wednesday evening brings Qualcomm’s own reckoning, and consensus expectations aren’t kind: analysts are modeling a 6.5 percent revenue decline to $9.69 billion and a 19 percent drop in EPS to $2.24. Options traders are pricing in a post-earnings swing of more than 9 percent — a bet that this one could go either way sharply.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

That divergence is the real story across chips right now. Intel trades well above the roughly $71 fair-value estimate analysts currently assign it, while Marvell — projected at $3.07 in EPS — carries what experts see as more than 28 percent of upside. The sector-wide rising tide that lifted every chip stock for two years is gone. What’s left is a stock-picker’s market, and the picking matters more than it has in years.

Intuitive Surgical Makes the Case for Boring

Amid all this, Intuitive Surgical is quietly demonstrating that profitable tech doesn’t have to mean AI infrastructure. Mizuho holds a Neutral rating on the stock with a price target trimmed to $400 after Q2 results, down from $500 — though the broader analyst consensus still lands at a median fair value of $485.

The appeal isn’t growth velocity; it’s structure. The company placed 468 da Vinci surgical systems in the second quarter, yet those systems account for only about 24 percent of total revenue. The rest is recurring income from instruments and service contracts — a razor-and-blade model that throws off predictable cash flow regardless of what chips are doing on any given Tuesday. In a market suddenly nervous about hardware cycles, that kind of boring reliability is starting to look like a feature, not a bug.

Crypto Waits Out the Fed

Bitcoin has drifted down toward $63,500 as the broader risk-off mood in equities spills into digital assets ahead of Wednesday’s Fed decision. Washington isn’t helping: the Senate has shelved the Crypto Clarity Act for now, removing one potential near-term catalyst just as the asset class needed one.

The Takeaway

Wednesday now carries a triple burden: a Fed decision that sets the macro tone, and earnings from Microsoft and Meta that will determine whether software can justify the hardware spending binge of the last two years. China’s lithography breakthrough already proved this week that no technology moat is permanent. The next question is whether the AI trade itself has one — and Microsoft is about to find out in front of the whole market.

Best regards,
