Lufthansa’s Wounded Stock Faces a Truce That Isn’t Buying Much Peace

The arithmetic of Lufthansa’s summer is brutal. Adjusted operating profit collapsed 56 percent to €383 million in the second quarter, down from €870 million a year earlier, while net income tumbled 88 percent to €123 million. Revenue actually grew 7.9 percent to €11.141 billion, but that did little to cushion the earnings blow. The carrier responded by slashing its full-year outlook to an adjusted EBIT of between €1.7 billion and €2.2 billion — a far cry from the “clearly above” the €1.96 billion posted last year that management had previously promised.

Investors have been voting with their feet ever since. The stock changed hands at €7.61 on Friday, down roughly 1.3 percent on the day and about 2.1 percent lower in the previous session, when it closed at €7.72. That puts the shares about 25 percent below their 52-week high of €10.27, with a 12 percent slide over the past month and an 8.2 percent decline since the start of the year. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 27.5, deep in oversold territory — a technical signal that could hint at a bounce, though hardly a fundamental one.

A mediation that buys time, not confidence

The most recent development — the appointment of former Thuringian premier Bodo Ramelow to mediate the long-running dispute with the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union — has done little to steady the ship. Ramelow is waiving his fee, with the sum earmarked for the children’s charity “Das fliegende Klassenzimmer” and an aviation museum. Pilots have agreed to shelve strike action during the talks, and Lufthansa has paused its planned fleet reduction in return.

Yet the market’s reaction tells a different story. The shares have been under pressure for days, trading roughly 15 percent below their 50-day moving average and nearly 10 percent beneath the 200-day average. That suggests the sell-off reflects a broader re-rating rather than a reaction to any single headline.

The fragility of the truce is evident in a member survey published Thursday by the pilots’ union: 70 percent of respondents still describe themselves as ready to strike, and nearly half feel their professional situation has deteriorated. Only about a quarter would still recommend a career in the cockpit. That is hardly the foundation for a durable peace — the mediation buys time, and markets rarely pay up for time.

Wall Street’s verdict: more pain ahead

The fundamental picture has prompted a wave of downgrades. Barclays Capital’s Andrew Lobbenberg cut the stock from “Equalweight” to “Underweight” on Wednesday, trimming the price target to €7.50. His reasoning is stark: even the already-lowered operating profit guidance looks too optimistic, and he anticipates another profit warning. Morgan Stanley followed suit, moving from “Overweight” to “Equalweight” with a new target of €7.50, down from €9.40.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lufthansa?

Bernstein Research, meanwhile, has held its “Market-Perform” rating with a €9 price target. Analyst Alex Irving points to elevated fuel prices squeezing airline margins and potentially forcing cuts in short-haul capacity. The target sits well above the current share price, but the neutral stance underscores that a higher target does not automatically translate into a buy recommendation.

Cost-cutting as the only lever

Management is scrambling to respond. CFO Till Streichert wants to find an additional €200 million in savings in the near term, on top of a turnaround program targeting €1.5 billion by the end of 2026 and €2.5 billion annually by 2028. The “New Ways” voluntary program, launched at the end of July, aims to eliminate around 550 full-time positions at Lufthansa Airlines and central corporate functions by 2030. Across the group, roughly 4,000 administrative roles are slated to go by then, with about 1,500 relocated to other international sites.

Capacity plans have been scaled back too. Instead of the 4 percent growth originally targeted for 2026, the flight offering is now expected to stagnate, with a further 1 percent reduction in European services under review.

The labor situation adds another layer of uncertainty. The mediation agreement reached on August 11 covers open pay questions across several operations, including Lufthansa Cargo, Cityline and Eurowings — but whether it will be enough to prevent further strike disruptions remains an open question.

Scattered bright spots, persistent gloom

Rare positive notes have emerged. On Wednesday, an A320neo completed its maiden flight from Frankfurt to Rome equipped with a new Starlink internet connection, with up to ten more aircraft slated for installation by year-end. On Tuesday, an Airbus A380 touched down too early on landing in Munich, damaging runway lights — all 351 passengers escaped unharmed, but the incident adds to a sense of operational fraying.

None of this moves the needle against the two forces that now define Lufthansa’s trajectory: fuel costs pressing on margins from one side, and an unresolved personnel conflict merely paused, not solved, from the other. The mediation may be a sensible diplomatic gesture from both sides, but it is a ceasefire, not a peace treaty. Investors appear to have priced that in already — and the chart suggests they are not done yet.
