Newmont’s Record Rally Faces a Test of Conviction

Newmont Mining is poised to conclude 2025 with a staggering share price gain of approximately 167%, a surge fueled by gold prices reaching unprecedented levels near $4,330 per ounce. However, at this very peak, a notable divergence is emerging. While operational performance remains robust, significant institutional investors are cashing out, and company insiders are selling shares. This raises a critical question for the market: has too much optimism already been priced in?

Operational Excellence from Ghana

Amid the shifting investor sentiment, Newmont’s on-the-ground execution continues to impress. The company’s Ahafo South mine in Ghana recently received dual honors at the Ghana Mining Industry Awards, being named “Best Green Mine” and “Best Performer in Innovation.” This recognition follows two major operational milestones: the Ahafo North mine has now entered full production, and the Ahafo South site has surpassed a lifetime production total of 10 million ounces of gold.

These achievements are fundamental to Newmont’s 2026 production targets and highlight the miner’s commitment to sustainable extraction practices—a factor that could support a premium valuation over the long term.

A Closer Look at the Selling Pressure

Recent disclosures reveal a significant pullback by major institutional holders. Assenagon Asset Management dramatically reduced its stake in the third quarter, selling off roughly 3.93 million shares for a reduction of 83.8%. Its remaining position is valued at approximately $64.17 million.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Newmont Mining?

This institutional profit-taking coincides with insider sales. Regulatory filings show that Director Bruce R. Brook disposed of 2,080 shares in early December at an average price of $92.36. Although such transactions are routine, their timing near the stock’s 52-week high of $102.12 is drawing attention from market observers.

Wall Street’s Stance: Bullish Despite Exits

Despite these exits, analyst sentiment toward Newmont remains overwhelmingly positive. Of the 22 market experts covering the stock, 18 maintain a “Buy” recommendation, representing a bullish consensus of 81%. UBS is particularly optimistic, issuing a price target of $125, which implies a potential upside of over 25% from current levels. The average price target among analysts clusters near present trading values of $98 to $99.50.

From a technical perspective, the shares continue to trade well above their 200-day moving average. A Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 35.6 suggests the stock has moved out of overbought territory following its historic rally, indicating room for potential technical recovery.

The Deciding Factor: Gold’s Trajectory

The overarching narrative for Newmont remains inextricably linked to the price of gold itself. Should the precious metal sustain levels above $4,300 per ounce, the company will likely be well-positioned to maintain its current valuation. However, any meaningful correction in the gold market would cast the recent institutional selling in a more cautionary light. The coming weeks will reveal whether the fundamental strength demonstrated in Ghana and elsewhere is sufficient to uphold investor confidence independently.
