Rare Earth Miner’s Shares Slip Despite Record Grades and Landmark Brazilian Legislation

The stars would appear to be aligning for Brazilian Rare Earths — a freshly passed Senate bill backing critical minerals, drill cores returning some of the highest rare earth concentrations seen anywhere, and a clear runway toward a year-end resource update. Yet the market’s verdict on Friday was unambiguous: the stock shed 7.8 percent to trade at EUR 2.14, leaving the shares just 2.9 percent above their 52-week low set last December.

Investors, it seems, are choosing to focus on widening interim losses and a cautious macro backdrop rather than the confluence of policy tailwinds and exceptional geology now building at the company’s Monte Alto deposit in Bahia state.

Senate Green-Lights Strategic Minerals Framework

The catalyst for optimism arrived midweek when Brazil’s Senate passed a long-anticipated framework law governing strategic and critical minerals. The legislation, now awaiting President Lula da Silva’s signature, establishes a BRL 2 billion guarantee fund for mining activities (FGAM) alongside BRL 5 billion in tax credits designed to spur domestic downstream processing.

The package also creates a national council for critical minerals (Cimce) with the authority to review foreign acquisitions — a signal that Brasília intends to play a more assertive role in shaping the sector. Brazil holds the world’s second-largest rare earth reserves yet has struggled to convert that geological endowment into commercial production, trailing far behind China’s dominant supply chain.

For Brazilian Rare Earths, the timing is fortuitous. The company has made no secret of its ambitions to build downstream processing capacity, and the new incentives directly target that goal. The legislation positions Brazil as a more credible link in the global rare earth supply chain, offering an alternative to Chinese dominance — a theme that has gained urgency among Western governments and manufacturers alike.

Exceptional Grades Continue at Monte Alto

The political progress lands alongside a steady drumbeat of exploration success. On Tuesday, the company reported further high-grade intercepts from Monte Alto, part of the broader Rocha da Rocha project. Highlights included an 8-meter section grading 21.8 percent total rare earth oxide (TREO) from a depth of 189 meters, and a separate 6.2-meter interval returning 25.4 percent TREO.

These results follow a pattern that has become familiar since late August, when the company first reported broad intervals exceeding 17 percent TREO. The consistency of such extreme concentrations is rarely seen in the industry, and last Friday’s release had already flagged peak values of up to 35.3 percent TREO at depth.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Brazilian Rare Earths?

The latest batch also underscored the deposit’s magnetic rare earth content. Neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) concentrations reached as high as 66,640 ppm, equivalent to 6.7 percent — a metric that matters commercially given NdPr’s critical role in permanent magnets for electric vehicles and wind turbines.

Drilling Program to Test Deposit’s Full Extent

The ultra-high-grade zones at Monte Alto remain open in three directions — north, south and east — and extend across wide intervals. To better define the mineralized geometry and overall volume, the company has outlined a 5,000-meter drilling campaign, with 1,400 meters dedicated specifically to the northern extensions.

These latest intercepts are not yet reflected in the current resource estimate. Management intends to fold the new data into a comprehensive mineral resource update targeted for the end of 2026. The drilling completed to date spans 10,000 meters and has already demonstrated extensions to the south, east and at depth.

The company’s half-year results, published last Friday for the period ending June 30, 2026, showed rising revenue but a widening loss, driven primarily by intensified exploration spending and preparations for future production capacity. The shares initially rose on the numbers before momentum faded.

A Defining Period Ahead

The project’s economic potential is substantial — estimates put its net present value at roughly USD 7.9 billion — but the market is clearly demanding proof rather than promise. International peers such as the Serra Verde project have already secured backing from US investors and government guarantees, raising the competitive bar for Brazilian Rare Earths to demonstrate commercial viability.

The next several months will be pivotal. Success in converting the planned 5,000 drill meters into a meaningfully expanded resource base would provide the foundation for a reassessment of the project’s industrial capacity. With supportive legislation now moving through the political process and grades that continue to defy expectations, the ingredients for a re-rating are present. Whether the market chooses to acknowledge them remains the open question.
