The AI Boom Hits a Hardware Wall — And Consumers Shrug

Dear readers,

Yesterday’s newsletter tracked the invisible plumbing being built to protect AI systems. Today the story moves from bytes to boxes: chips that can’t be made fast enough, warehouses being stocked for a holiday rush, and an American consumer who keeps spending even as headline growth cools. While the Nasdaq chases the latest app-store sensation, the more durable story is unfolding at the loading dock and the foundry — where operational discipline, not vision decks, is deciding who actually makes money.

Consumer Strength Meets Margin Defense

The U.S. economy is sending a split signal: second-quarter GDP growth cooled to an annualized 1.5%, yet consumer spending climbed a healthy 3.2%. AutoZone shows how a well-run operator turns that gap into profit. The auto-parts retailer blew past expectations in its fiscal fourth quarter, posting adjusted earnings of $56.05 per share on revenue that rose 5.6% to just under $6.6 billion. The standout number, though, was margin: gross margins expanded by more than 1.8 percentage points, aided by tariff refunds and shrewd LIFO inventory accounting. Shares are trading at €2,462 in European dealings.

Amazon is making a parallel bet on resilience rather than just growth. The company is lifting its 2026 investment forecast to roughly $220 billion, with shares recently near €222. A slice of that spending is going toward insurance against disruption: AWS has locked in backup power capacity through a multi-billion-dollar contract with Generac, while Amazon separately committed $1.9 billion to its delivery partner program. The pattern across both companies is the same — investors rewarding pricing power paired with logistical moats, the combination that protects cash flow when growth itself is uneven.

Where the AI Story Gets Physical

The gap between software hype and hardware reality keeps narrowing. Meta’s new AI assistant, Muse, shot to the top of U.S. App Store downloads and gave the stock a lift to €638.50 in European trading — the kind of headline that makes for an easy tech-rally narrative.

But the more consequential story is happening one rung down the supply chain, at the companies that actually have to power these systems. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said the company can currently fill only about half of what customers are asking for, driven by an explosion in demand for CPUs running AI inference — the computing work models do after training, which leans on central processors far more than the graphics chips that usually dominate AI headlines. Faced with that shortfall, Intel confirmed it has raised prices on some consumer and server chips, citing rising costs and soaring demand: roughly 10% on consumer PC CPUs and 15–17% on select server products. The stock trades around €104.

Rival AMD crossed $1 trillion in market capitalization for the first time this week, extending a five-day winning streak, with shares now just under €529. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang poured more fuel on the fire, forecasting a doubling of chip unit volumes sold next year. Put together, the AI trade is shifting from a data-center fantasy into a hardware bottleneck story — one where suppliers, not buyers, are dictating terms through price increases.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

Crypto Clears $3 Trillion Again

Away from equities, digital assets are pulling in fresh capital. Total crypto market capitalization has climbed back above $3 trillion, powered by Bitcoin, which briefly touched above $87,000. The money behind the move is coming through familiar channels: U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs took in nearly $1 billion on Monday alone, the strongest single day since last October, with BlackRock’s IBIT fund leading at $381 million.

The rally has been accompanied by a buildup in leverage — futures open interest has climbed to nearly $160 billion. What stands out is the source of the buying. The ETF wrapper has changed the market’s plumbing permanently: steady institutional flows, not retail speculation, are now setting the pace of these moves.

Cheaper Oil, and a Summit That Could Reset the Board

Consumers and logistics operators are getting a timely assist from commodities. Brent crude has eased in recent trading, briefly slipping below $100 a barrel on signs of geopolitical de-escalation. Iran has reportedly offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days in exchange for U.S. military concessions, and Saudi Arabia has restarted a key east-west pipeline.

Whether cheaper energy holds may hinge on what happens Thursday, when President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet in Washington. Ahead of the summit, negotiators are reportedly discussing reciprocal tariff cuts worth $30 billion on each side — talks that, if they land, could meaningfully lower the cost of moving goods across the Pacific for the first time in years.

The Takeaway

Thursday’s summit has the power to reset global supply-chain costs in either direction, while resilient consumer spending and softer energy prices already give companies a cushion heading into year-end. For investors, the lesson from AutoZone, Amazon, and Intel alike is the same: the names worth owning right now aren’t the ones promising growth, but the ones proving they can turn scarcity, tariffs, and shifting demand into wider margins.

Best regards,
