The UK is seeing a wave of legal action and regulatory intervention over workplace deaths, with a construction firm now facing corporate manslaughter charges and police investigating a fatal accident at a major delivery hub. For employers, the cases serve as a stark reminder that safety failures can carry serious criminal consequences.

Construction Firm Charged Over Worker’s Death

Green Steel & Cladding Ltd has been formally charged with corporate manslaughter following the death of a worker in April 2021. The charge, brought in the opening days of September, marks a significant escalation in the legal repercussions facing the firm over the incident.

Arrest Made After Fatal Accident at Barnsley Parcel Hub

In a separate case, police in South Yorkshire have released a 34-year-old man on bail after arresting him on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. The arrest followed the death of a worker at an Evri parcel hub in Barnsley on August 27.

The victim, a man in his 30s, died after being struck by a vehicle at the facility. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been notified and is involved in the ongoing investigation.

Coroner Records Electrocution Death at Southampton Hotel

Other fatalities are also moving through the judicial system. In Southampton, a coroner has recorded a death by electrocution for Jason Gledhill, 55, who died on August 13 while carrying out maintenance at the Southampton Harbour Hotel. A full inquest into the incident has been scheduled for June 30, 2027.

Steel Firm Fined After Worker’s Asphyxiation

Beyond the UK, authorities in other jurisdictions are finalising safety-related cases. Algoma Steel was recently fined $250,000 after pleading guilty to an occupational health and safety offence. The penalty followed the June 2023 death of a contract employee who asphyxiated while cleaning a coke oven gas main that lacked proper warning signs.

HSE Finds Safety Breaches on Tomb Raider Set

The regulator has also turned its attention to the media sector, ruling that the production of the Tomb Raider television series violated British safety laws. The investigation focused on Project Temple Productions, an Amazon MGM Studios entity, which was filming at Shinfield Studios.

The HSE found that the production failed to implement required biological monitoring for workers involved in isocyanate paint spraying. Isocyanates are recognised as a leading cause of occupational asthma.

While an improvement notice was issued in April 2026 and the production complied within a month, the case highlights rare regulatory intervention in the television industry — only four such productions have been cited by the HSE in the last four years.

Although production was paused for two weeks in March due to an injury to actress Sophie Turner, the HSE clarified that the safety violations regarding paint use were not related to that specific incident.

New Nursery Safety Law Takes Effect

New regulations are also taking effect this month to address long-standing safety concerns. As of September 1, a new law regarding nursery safety requires that all babies under the age of one be placed on their backs in cots with no additional items. The legislation follows a high-profile campaign by the parents of Genevieve Meehan, who died in a nursery environment in 2022.

Compensation Equalised for Dust-Related Disease Deaths

The UK government has also introduced legislation to equalise compensation for the families of workers who die from silicosis and other dust-related diseases. Starting October 31, bereaved families will receive payouts equivalent to those given to living sufferers, rising from an average of £10,700 to approximately £17,700.

Prison Investment and Early Release Scheme

In the justice sector, the government is investing £110m to create additional prison capacity to address overcrowding. While the Ministry of Justice is implementing an early release scheme for approximately 4,500 prisoners starting in October, officials confirmed that individuals convicted of manslaughter are specifically excluded from the programme.
