Amazon’s Friday Rally: A Convergence of AI, Pharma, and Media Ambitions

A trio of strategic announcements propelled Amazon shares sharply higher on Friday, with the stock climbing 5.6 percent to close at $233.65 on elevated trading volume. The surge was driven by significant developments across the company’s cloud, healthcare, and media divisions, underscoring its multifaceted growth strategy.

The most potent catalyst emerged from CEO Andy Jassy’s annual shareholder letter. He revealed that the annualized revenue run rate for AWS’s generative AI services has now surpassed $15 billion, a milestone reached in the first quarter of 2026 alone. This growth is underpinned by strong demand for Amazon’s proprietary AI chips. Its Trainium3 processors, which only began shipping in March, are already sold out, and a significant portion of the capacity for the next-generation Trainium4, due in 18 months, is pre-reserved by major customers.

Financial analysts were quick to respond to the news. Cantor Fitzgerald raised its price target on Amazon stock from $250 to $260, reiterating a buy rating. BNP Paribas analyst Nick Jones argued that investors are underestimating the revenue potential tied to Amazon’s planned $200 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, placing a fair value estimate of $320 on the shares. William Blair reaffirmed its “Outperform” rating and added Amazon to its Conviction List, citing compelling evidence for its AI strategy and potential for retail margin improvement through robotics.

Simultaneously, Amazon made a bold entry into the lucrative market for weight-loss drugs. Its Amazon Pharmacy service is now offering Foundayo™, a daily pill from Eli Lilly that does not require refrigeration. This allows Amazon to stock the medication in kiosks at its primary care clinics and offer it via express delivery. Insured patients will pay $25 per month, while the cash price is $149, with coupons automatically applied at checkout. The company aims to make same-day delivery available in 4,500 cities by the end of 2026. Amazon’s coupon system has already saved customers over $200 million, with GLP-1 medications representing the largest savings category.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

In a separate but equally ambitious move, the company formalized one of the largest corporate infrastructure commitments ever made to a single U.S. state. Amazon plans to invest a total of $25 billion in Mississippi. This includes an $11 billion expansion of existing data centers in Madison County and a new $1 billion project in Clinton, expected to create more than 2,000 jobs. Part of the investment will convert a former Delphi manufacturing plant in Hinds County into a data center. Amazon is also covering all costs for new energy infrastructure, enabling utility Entergy Mississippi to modernize the state’s power grid with a $300 million investment without burdening existing ratepayers.

The company’s media ambitions were also on full display. Prime Video debuted as the fourth media partner in the history of The Masters golf tournament, broadcasting two exclusive hours of coverage from Augusta on Thursday and Friday, including the famous Amen Corner. This expanded total U.S. broadcast coverage of the event to 27 hours, a 50 percent increase from 2024. Concurrently, Amazon launched a new premium streaming tier called “Prime Video Ultra.” Priced at $4.99 per month—a 67 percent increase over the previous ad-free tier—it offers up to five simultaneous streams, 100 offline downloads, and exclusive 4K/UHD content. Existing annual Prime subscribers can access it for $45.99 per year.

The broader market environment provided additional tailwinds. Reports of a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran pushed energy prices lower, which is expected to relieve pressure on Amazon’s substantial shipping costs. As the company prepares to report quarterly earnings on April 30, investors will be watching closely to see if its heavy investments are beginning to impact margins or if robust growth continues to outweigh the costs.
